PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a control circuit for a flat-surface type fluorescent lamp that suppresses concentration of mercury in the sensor installed part on a lamp container surface and provides quick control response. SOLUTION : The discharge lamp lighting apparatus is provided with a transparent discharge container 6; a discharge medium containing mercury vapor and rare-gas airtightly sealed into the discharge container 6, a pair of electrodes 7a and 7b provided in the discharge apparatus to discharge the discharge medium; an infrared sensor 11 arranged in a position separated from the surface of the discharge container 6; a power control circuit 12, to which output signals from the infrared sensor 11 are supplied and which controls the power supplied to the pair of electrodes 7a and 7b provided in the discharge container based on the output signals; and a voltage supply circuit 13 for supplying the output voltage, controlled by the power control circuit 12, to the pair of electrodes 7a and 7b provided in the discharge container 6.
