PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide the cleaning method by treating the exhaust gas containing hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide together with nitrogen oxides under an oxygen excessive atmosphere. SOLUTION : The treating atmosphere of the exhaust gas is swung alternately between the oxygen excessive atmosphere and a reductive atmosphere, and the exhaust gas is brought into contact with the first catalyst consisting of at least one kind platinum group element among Pt, Rh, Pd and Ir, at least one kind metal, its compd. or its ion among silver, copper, zinc, aluminum, gallium, tin, zirconium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt and nickel and at least one kind oxide among titanium oxide, zirconia and tin oxide. Then the exhaust gas is brought into contact with the second catalyst (nitrogen oxides occluding catalyst) consisting of one or >=2 kinds metal oxides or composite oxides among alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, aluminum, silver, titanium and rare earth elements and at least one kind platinum group element among Pt, Rh, Pd and Ir. |
