PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a phosphor emitting a high luminance light on vacuum UV excitation, and to provide a light emitting element using the same. ŽSOLUTION : This phosphor is constituted by employing an alkaline earth metal silicate activated with bivalent europium and trivalent rare earth metal elements, or an alkaline earth metal silicate activated with bivalent europium and trivalent rare earth metal elements and containing an alkali metal element. The light emitting element is constituted by employing the phosphor. Preferable embodiments include an alkaline earth metal silicate with a diopside-type structure is used as the alkaline earth metal silicate; Ce is used as the trivalent rare earth element activating the alkaline earth metal silicate; and sodium is used as the alkali metal element to be incorporated.
