PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a light emitting device which has a high color rendering property and high light emitting intensity by using a phosphor that is efficiently excited by an ultraviolet ray or short-wavelength visible light to emit light.
SOLUTION : The light emitting device includes : a light emitting element that emits the ultraviolet ray or the short-wavelength visible light; and the phosphor that is excited by the ultraviolet ray or the short-wavelength visible light to emit visible light. The phosphor has a composition represented by a general formula M1O2_aM2O_bM3X2 : M4. (Here, M1 is at least one element selected from a group composed of Si, Ge, Ti, Zr, and Sn; M2 is at least one element selected from a group composed of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, and Zn; M3 is at least one element selected from a group composed of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, and Zn; X is at least one halogen element; M4 is at least one rare-earth element essentially including Eu2+; a is in a range of 0.1 to 1.3; and b is in a range of 0.1 to 0.25).
