An optical amplifier which is used for an optical wavelength multiplex communication system and is capable of control operation responding to relaxation time. The optical amplifier has a detector section for detecting the incoming light, a dispersion compensator for changing dispersion in the incoming light, an optical amplifier section which amplifies the light from the dispersion compensator through induced emission by applying the excited light to an optical amplifying medium containing rare-earth element, a propagation delay detector section for detecting the light propagation delay time between the detector section and the optical amplifier section, and a control section for controlling a gain of the optical amplifier section in accordance with the propagation delay time. |
