PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To improve life characteristics of a DC lighting type mercury-free metal halide lamp.
SOLUTION : A discharge vessel 11 is constituted by sealing parts 12a, 12b at both ends of a discharge space 14 filled with a discharge medium containing halide and rare gas and containing no mercury. An anode 3a2 and a cathode 3b2 are oppositely arranged in the discharge space 14, and one end part of a metal foil 3a1 is connected to the base side end part of the anode 3a2, and one end part of the metal foil 3a1 is connected to the base side end part of the cathode 3b2. The metal foils 3a1, 3b1 are airtightly sealed by the sealing parts 12a, 12b. The other end parts of the metal foils 3a2, 3b2 are connected to external leads 3a3, 3b3, respectively, and led out to the outside of the sealing parts 12a, 12b, respectively. The direction of a current flowing in the discharge vessel 11 is fixed, and the metal foil 3a1 on the anode 3a2 side and the external lead 3a3 connected to this metal foil 3a1 are applied with a cover of a rhenium metal film 4 in a surface-roughened state.
