PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rare earth doped fiber a transient response of which is suppressed and an optical packet communication optical amplifier which has a good characteristics even if traffic is low.
SOLUTION : The optical packet communication optical amplifier includes a first rare earth doped fiber (EDFA) having an active region the diameter of which ranges from 3.4 μm to 10 μm, an intermediate gain flattening filter, and a second EDFA. The first EDFA is shorter than the second EDFA and the intensities of wavelength channels of the intermediate gain flattening filter are regulated so that the light intensities of the wavelength channels transmitted through the second EDFA may be equal to one another.
