PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide aluminum alloy having excellent toughness, and to provide its production method.
SOLUTION : The aluminum alloy has a composition comprising, by mass, 5 to 10% Si, at least one kind of rare earth element in an amount of 1 to 6% in total and 0.3 to 1.5% Zr, and, among one or more kinds of transition elements selected from the group consisting of Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, Mn, Mo, W and V, containing at least both of Fe and Ni, wherein the total of the transition elements is 5 to 12%, and the balance substantially Al. The aluminum alloy has the specified composition, the aluminum alloy has high tensile strength and excellent toughness such as elongation. The aluminum alloy may contain 0.1 to 0.5% Mg.
