PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a wear resistant member exhibiting excellent wear resistance under water lubrication in which the wear resistant member slides while coming into contact with water. SOLUTION : The wear resistant member used under water lubrication possesses a silicon nitride sintered compact having a grain boundary phase mainly comprising 75-97 mass% silicon nitride, 0.2-5 mass% at least one kind of Ti, Hf, Zr, Nb, W, and Mo and the balance Si-R-Al-O-N compound (where R is a rare earth element), wherein the ratio M2/M1 of the existing ratio M1 of the Si-R-Al-O-N compound in the sintered compact inner part to the existing ratio M2 of the Si-R-Al-O-N compound in the sintered compact surface part is 0.9-1.1.
