PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a (rare earth)-Mg-Ni based hydrogen storage alloy having excellent alkali resistance despite its high La content and low Pr and Nb contents and a hydrogen storage alloy electrode using the alloy and also to provide a nickel metal hydride battery having high capacity and long cycle life.
SOLUTION : The nickel metal hydride battery contains particles (36) of a hydrogen storage alloy in a negative electrode (26), and this hydrogen storage alloy has a composition expressed by general formula (LaaSmbAc)1-wMgwNixAlyTz (wherein, A and T denote at least one element selected from the group consisting of Pr, Nd, etc., and at least one element selected from the group consisting of V, Nb, etc., respectively; the subscripts (a), (b) and (c) satisfy relationships given by a>0, b>0, 0.1>c≥0 and a+b+c=1, respectively; and the subscripts (w), (x), (y) and (z) fall within the ranges given by 0.1
