A method of synthesising a metal alkoxide from the corresponding metal halide; the method comprising the step of reacting the metal halide with the alkoxide of an alkali earth metal to produce the desired metal alkoxide essentially free of chloride contamination. Preferred metal alkoxides are gallium or indium alkoxides with gallium isopropoxide and indium isopropoxide particularly preferred. The corresponding alkaline earth metal alkoxides may be strontium or barium isopropoxide. The end-point of the reaction may be determined by taking aliquots of the reaction mixture and treating with nitric acid and silver nitrate solution to test for the presence of halide. |
