PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method of etching an optical amplification medium fiber having a hole formed extending in a longitudinal direction.
SOLUTION : The method of etching the optical amplification medium fiber is provided for etching the optical amplification medium fiber 10 which has : a core to which rare-earth elements are added; inside cladding provided on the outer circumference of the core; a hole layer formed on the outer circumference of the inside cladding; outside cladding provided on the outer circumference of the hole layer; and a coating provided on the outer circumference of the outside cladding, wherein the hole layer comprises the hole formed extending in the longitudinal direction and a coupling part for coupling the outer circumference of the inside cladding to the inner circumference of the outside cladding. The method is characterized in that : after a coating-removed part 17 is formed by removing part of the coating in the longitudinal direction, air is force-fed from both ends of the optical amplification medium fiber 10 into the hole to apply internal pressure to the hole, and in such a condition; the coating-removed part 17 is immersed in an etching liquid 34; and an inside cladding-exposed part, in which the inside cladding is exposed, is formed by removing part of the outside cladding of the optical amplification medium fiber 10 in the longitudinal direction.
