PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnesium oxide powder which emits ultraviolet radiation near the wavelength of 250 nm at high efficiency when excited by ultraviolet radiation generated by the gas discharge of Xe gas.
SOLUTION : The magnesium oxide fired product powder is obtained by firing a powder mixture including : a source powder of a magnesium oxide; and a powder of a fluoride of at least a kind of an auxiliary metal chosen from the group consisting of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal other than magnesium, a rare earth metal, aluminum, zinc, and tin, wherein the powder mixture contains the fluoride in the amount of 0.05-30 mol based on 100 mol of magnesium in the source powder of a magnesium oxide.
