PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain a magnetic recording medium wherein high output is attained and which has excellent short wavelength recording characteristics by using magnetic powder which has a fine particle size and whose saturation magnetization is further enhanced while high coercive force is maintained. SOLUTION : Spherical or elliptical magnetic powder containing iron, palladium and nitrogen, further containing at least one element selected from a rare earth element, silicon and aluminum, including an iron nitride phase represented by general formula Fe16N2and having 5 to 30 nm average particle size is used as the magnetic powder incorporated in a magnetic layer.
