PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnetic powder wherein its excellent magnetic property for using it in a high-recording-density magnetic medium, especially its high coercive force can be obtained even when its grain size becomes very minute, and to provide a magnetic recording medium using the magnetic powder.
SOLUTION : The magnetic powder is one of the many kinds of iron-based magnetic powder wherein they contain one or more kinds of W and Mo by total 0.01-10 atom% when being represented at the atomic ratio to Fe, especially contain Fe16N2 as their main components. In them, the one exhibiting a high coercive force not smaller than 238 kA/m (3, 000 Oe) becomes a suitable object. They can contain further in addition to W and Mo one or more kinds of Al and rare earth elements (Y is treated as a rare earth element too) within the scope not larger than total 25 atom% when being represented at the atomic ratio to Fe.
