PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To minimize a noise to be generated by scattered rays of light, and to increase the signal output of an amplifier as a result in a glass fiber for a light amplifier comprising a matrix glass containing at least one type of heavy metal oxide.
SOLUTION : This invention relates to a glass fiber, comprising a core, the matrix glass of which contains the oxide of Bi, Te, Se, Sb, Pb, Cd, Ga and As, and/or mixed oxide, and/or at least one type of heavy metal oxide selected from among those mixtures and at least one type of rare earth compound, wherein the above mentioned core is surrounded by at least two glass clad layers, and a change Δn in refractive index from that of the core to that of the first clad is ranging from 0.001 to 0.08, and the refractive index of the first clad is set so as to be lower than that of the core.
