PURPOSE : A surface-coated member including a high hardness coating which has a Vickers hardness(Hv) that is equal to or greater than that of conventional high hardness coatings, and which has an oxidation initiation temperature that represents oxidation resistance and is higher than that of the conventional high hardness coatings is provided.
CONSTITUTION : A surface-coated member includes a substrate(1), and a high hardness coating formed on the substrate, wherein the high hardness coating includes a coating layer(2) containing a compound nitride that includes Al as main components and at least one element selected from the group consisting of Zr, Hf, Pd, Ir and the rare earth elements. The compound nitride in the coating layer, in its electropositive elements, contains 10~50 atomic percents of the selected element, and the balance of Al and unavoidable impurities. The surface-coated member also includes a bonding layer which is formed between the substrate and the coating layer, and which contains at least one of nitrides, carbides, and carbonitrides of at least one element selected from the group consisting of Zr, Ti and Cr. The substrate is a high-speed tool steel or a cemented carbide.
