PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain a perpendicular magnetic recording medium having high thermal fluctuation resistance and recording resolution and low medium noise. SOLUTION : The perpendicular magnetic recording medium which can be used as a perpendicular two layer medium is provided with a magnetic recording layer which is layered on a substrate and has a first perpendicular magnetic recording layer containing Pt or Cr, Co and oxygen and a second perpendicular magnetic recording layer mainly containing a crystalline alloy containing rare earth elements selected from Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Tm and Yb and transition metals including Co, Cr and Pt and one of a protective layer, a lubricant layer and a laminated layer of a protective layer/a lubricant layer.
