PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnetic recording medium wherein a particle size is very small, a very high coercive force is provided, a high output is achieved by using magnetic powder having optimal saturated magnetization for high-density recording, and good short wave recording characteristics are provided. SOLUTION : In the magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer containing magnetic power and a binder on a nonmagnetic support, the magnetic powder contain at least one selected from a rare earth element and/or silicon, aluminum, and iron and nitrogen as constituting elements and an Fe16N2phase an average particle size is 5 to 50nm and the particle is substantially spherical or elliptic.
