PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnetic recording medium which is excellent in high recording density property that can be applied to the storage capacity of one TB or more.
SOLUTION : This magnetic recording medium has a non-magnetic support; at least one non-magnetic intermediate layer formed on one surface of the non-magnetic support, and containing non-magnetic powder and a binder resin; and at least one magnetic layer containing a magnetic powder and a binder resin formed on the non-magnetic intermediate layer. The magnetic powder has a core portion and an outer layer portion. The outer layer portion contains rare earth elements mainly. The core portion contains a Fe16N2 phase in which iron or some of iron is substituted with transition metal elements. A thickness of an uppermost magnetic layer of the magnetic is 0.09 μm or less, or the product (Br×δ) of the residual magnetic flux density (Br) of the uppermost magnetic layer of the magnetic layer and thickness (δ) are from 0.0018 to 0.05 μTm, and its coercive force is from 200 to 400 kA/m.
