PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a mercury-free metal halide lamp in which a temperature rise of the upper part of a light-emitting tube in starting is suppressed and a lumen maintenance factor is improved, and also to provide a metal halide lamp lighting device using this and a headlamp.
SOLUTION : The metal halide lamp MHL is equipped with : a translucent airtight container 1 which has a discharge space 1c inside and in which a wall thickness of a part opposing to the center part is 1.7 mm or more; a pair of electrodes 1b which are sealed and sheathed so as to be separated and opposed in the discharge space; and a discharge medium which contains a halogenide of the light-emitting metal and rare gas, and which does not substantially contain mercury (Hg). When lighting on so as to make a lamp electric power thrown in from the starting time to a stable lighting time larger than the thrown-in lamp electric power in stable lighting, if a lamp voltage at 16 seconds after starting is set at V16 (V), and the lowest lamp voltage after starting is set at V0 (V), a rate of the lamp voltages V16/V0 satisfies V16/V0≥1.5.
