PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a catalyst for exhaust gas purification exhibiting a sufficient function in HT period.
SOLUTION : The catalyst comprises a carrier substrate 1, catalyst carrier layers 2, 3 containing compounded oxides 21, 31 of a rare earth element and zirconium, and catalyst metals 23, 33 deposited on the catalyst carrier layers 2, 3. As the oxide containing the rare earth element, only the compounded oxides 21, 31 of the rare earth element and zirconium at 0.8 or higher atomic ratio of zirconium to the rare earth element are contained but no compounded oxides of the rare earth element and zirconium at less than 0.8 atomic ratio of zirconium to the rare earth element is contained.
