PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To suppress the generation of blackening in a discharge lamp for an automobile in which mercury is not essentially employed.
SOLUTION : As for the discharge lamp for the automobile, an airtight container 1 is composed of a light-emitting tube 11, a discharge space 13 in which the surface area formed inside is 45 mm2 or more, and sealing parts 121, 122 formed at both ends of the light-emitting tube part 11. Metal halide and rare gas are sealed into the discharge space 13, while mercury is not contained essentially. A pair of electrodes of which the diameters are 0.40 mm or less, and which have been opposed and arranged by keeping a prescribed distance between electrodes in the discharge space 13 are sealed into the sealing parts 121, 122 at one end.
