PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a planar rare earth sintered magnet with a relatively large leakage magnetic flux at the end of the magnet and having a magnetic field component vertical to the principal plane of the magnet securing required intensity for appropriate use in an HDD VCM device or the like with a latch mechanism.
SOLUTION : Planar rare earth sintered magnets 40A and 40B have a magnetization direction at least at the end of the magnet inclined in an orientation where a leakage magnetic flux increases with respect to the thickness direction vertical to principal planes 45A and 45B of the magnets. Preferably, an inclination [!theta!] in the magnetization direction with respect to the thickness direction is 10° or smaller, and reduction in the magnetic field vertical component caused by the inclination of the magnetization direction is 1.5% or less compared with a case where the magnetic end is magnetized in the thickness direction. Such a planar rare earth sintered magnet can be appropriately used as a permanent magnet of the VCM device with the latch mechanism.
