PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnetic recording medium, wherein very high coercive force is provided, and moreover a high output is achieved by using magnetic powder having optimal saturated magnetization for high-density recording and superior short-wave recording characteristics are provided.
SOLUTION : In the magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer containing magnetic powder and a binder on a nonmagnetic support, at least one undercoat layer between the magnetic layer and the nonmagnetic support and a back-coat layer on the surface opposite to the magnetic layer of the nonmagnetic support, the magnetic powder has a multilayered structure of the inner layer and an outer layer; at least a rare earth element is contained in the outer layer part, magnetic powder containing at least an Fe16N2 phase is contained in the inner layer part and the magnetic layer has ≤300 nm thickness and 79.6 to 318.7 kA/m (1, 000 to 4, 000 Oe) coercive force (Hc) in the longitudinal direction.
