PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an alkaline storage battery having a negative electrode with high capacity because of containing a rare-earth -Mg-Ni based hydrogen storage alloy, and having an excellent charge-discharge cycle characteristic.
SOLUTION : The negative electrode 4 of this alkaline storage battery contains : hydrogen storage alloy powder; additive powder comprising metal zinc or a zinc compound; and a binder for binding the powder substances to each other. The composition of the hydrogen storage alloy powder is represented by general formula : Ln1-xMgx(Ni1-yTy)z, where Ln is at least one kind selected from a group comprising a lanthanoid element, Ca, Sr, Sc, Y, Ti, Zr and Hf; T is at least one selected from a group comprising V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Al, Ga, Zn, Sn, In, Cu, Si, P and B; and x, y and x are numbers satisfying 0
