PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a catalyst which is inexpensive and does not cause carbon deposition when the catalyst is used for producing hydrogen-containing gas by a partial oxidation reaction of a hydrocarbon.
SOLUTION : The catalyst for partially oxidizing the hydrocarbon comprises an oxide of a rare earth metal as a carrier and a Co-containing catalytically active metal is deposited on the carrier. The oxide of the rare earth metal to be used is preferably CeO2, Y2O3 or a mixture of them and the deposited amount of Co is preferably 0.5-3.0 wt%.
