PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a ceramic sintered compact having high hardness, further, while maintaining excellent chemical stability and heat resistance, having high denseness and exhibiting satisfactory wear resistance, and suitable as a high temperature structural material, to provide a cutting insert formed of the ceramic sintered compact, and capable of exhibiting excellent chipping resistance and wear resistance particularly at the time of high speed cutting, and to provide a cutting tool provided with the cutting insert.
SOLUTION : 1. The ceramic sintered compact comprises silicon carbide and aluminum oxide, and is characterized in that the content of the silicon carbide is 10 to 30 mass%, and also, the thickness of a rare earth element-containing boundary phase present on the boundary between the particles of the silicon carbide and the particles of the aluminum oxide is 0.5 to 10 nm. 2. The cutting insert is formed of the ceramic sintered compact. 3. The cutting tool is obtained by providing a holder with the cutting insert.
