To provide an oxynitride phosphor containing an alkaline earth element, and provides an inorganic phosphor which exhibits a brightness being higher than that of a conventional rare earth doped saialon phosphor and is chemically stable. A phosphor of the present invention which comprises an inorganic composition containing at least M element, A element, silicon, oxygen and nitrogen (wherein M is one or more elements selected from the group consisting of Mn, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb, and A is one or more elements selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba) and comprises a crystal having the crystal structure being the same as that of A2Si5N8 and a crystal containing A element; and a method for producing the above phosphor which comprises firing a raw material mixture containing at least a silicon nitride powder, an inorganic substance containing M element and an inorganic substance containing A element in a nitrogen atmosphere in the temperature range of 1200 to 2200˚C. |
