PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a solid acid catalyst for ring opening polymerization, capable of giving a polyether in a high yield, by subjecting a cyclic ether to the ring opening polymerization under a mild condition, and capable of being easily recovered and reused, and to provide a ring opening polymerization method.
SOLUTION : This solid acid catalyst is used for the ring opening polymerization of the cyclic ether, wherein the catalyst comprise a rare earth metal silicate having a mole ratio (Si/M) of silicon atoms (Si) to rare earth metal atoms (M) of 20 to 1/3. The ring opening polymerization method comprises subjecting the cyclic ether to the ring opening polymerization in the presence of the solid acid catalyst of the rare earth metal silicate.
