The invention discloses an amplifying optical fiber (1), which comprises a single mode core (10) and a multi-mode core (20) surrounding the single mode core. The multimode core includes a doped layer called a "doped ring" (21) and a certain concentration of active rare earth ions to amplify at least one optical signal by the active rare earth ions so as to inject into the amplification fiber. The size of the optical fiber is determined as follows : the product of its length and Raman efficiency is greater than or equal to 0.5 W-1. In addition, the optical fiber shows absorption defined by the absorption coefficient expressed in dB/m, which shows a maximum value called "maximum absorption" at a certain wavelength, and the optical fiber shows accumulated absorption corresponding to the product of the maximum absorption and length, which is greater than or equal to 100dB. The invention also provides amplifiers including such optical fibers, single-mode pumping and multi-mode pumping. |
