PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a high-strength glass member applicable to thinning and lightening objects.
SOLUTION : The surface part of a glass material containing at least one kind of rare earth element selected from Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu is irradiated with an ultrashort pulse laser so as to form crystalline heterogeneous phases at least containing the above rare earth element(s). Thus, it can be utilized for various structural members, magnetic disk materials, FPDs (Flat Panel Displays), tableware, window glass or the like requiring crack resistance even when being thinned and lightened.
