PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a mercury-free metal halide lamp and a head light using this in which the occurrence of the flickering of light emission is suppressed and in which the start-up of light flux immediately after starting is improved.
SOLUTION : The metal halide lamp MHL comprises a translucent air-tight container 1 of which the inner volume is 0.1 cc or less; and a pair of electrodes 1b facing each other with a distance of 5 mm or less, sealed in the container : and contains discharging media sealed in the translucent air-tight container 1, containing halide compounds of a plurality of metals selected from scandium (Sc), sodium (Na), indium (In), zinc (Zn) and rare earth metal, as well as a rare gas, but substantially not containing mercury (Hg). A formula : 0.45≤V0/V1≤0.72 is satisfied on the condition that a tube wall load is 60 W/cm2 or more, an average lamp voltage during 0.3 to 1.2 seconds after starting is V0, an average lamp voltage during a stable time is V1.
