A rare earth metal/4th-period transition metal containing organic/inorganic composite, having a rare earth metal and a 4th-period transition metal incorporated therein in high concentration by doping and satisfying the requirements of optical quenching suppression and optical transparency insurance; and utilizing the same, an optical amplifier, light control optical element and luminescent device. There is provided a rare earth metal/4th-period transition metal containing organic/inorganic composite, comprising an organic polymer and, dispersed therein, at least one rare earth metal and 4th-period transition metal, which composite is composed of rare earth metal (1), an inorganic dispersion phase consisting of other metal species (2) coordinated via oxygen thereto, and an optically transparent organic polymer. Preferably, the average diameters of rare earth metal/4th-period transition metal and inorganic dispersion phase having other metal species (2) coordinated via oxygen thereto are in the range of 0.1 to 1000 nm. The ratio of rare earth metal/4th-period transition metal is preferably ≤ 90 wt.%, in terms of solid contents, based on the total amount of organic polymer and rare earth metal dispersion phase. |
