Mixed carbonates (I) of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and/or rare earth metals are used for containment of radioactive carbon, where (I) have a fritting temperature below their decarbonation temperature and have a Mohs hardness of at least 4. Mixed carbonates of formula (I) are used for containment of radioactive carbon, where (I) have a fritting temperature below their decarbonation temperature and have a Mohs hardness of at least 4. AB(CO 3) (n+m)/2(I) A, B : alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and/or rare earth metals; m, n : positive integers such that the mixed carbonate has a neutral charge. An independent claim is also included for containment of radioactive carbon by mixing radiocarbon-containing carbon dioxide or a radiocarbon-containing alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or rare earth metal carbonate with an aqueous solution of ACl nand BCl mor of A(OH) nand B(OH) mto precipitate (I), recovering the precipitate in powder form, optionally rinsing the powder, compressing the powder and fritting the product at a temperature below the decarbonation temperature of (I). |
