PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a waveguide added with rare-earth elements and capable of generating ASE light of wideband.
SOLUTION : An optical fiber 1 has a core region 2 of high refractive index, composed of a material principally comprising glass or glass ceramics, and a clad region 3 of low refractive index surrounding the core region 2. The optical fiber 1 contains a rare-earth element (e.g. Er, Tm, or Yb) at least in the core region 2. In the spectrum of ASE light, generated when pumping a light of a single wavelength is supplied, a 15 dB wavelength region or a 10 dB band of the optical fiber 1 includes 1.45-1.65 μm or 1.5-1.7 μm. Alternatively, a 3 dB band of the optical fiber 1 includes S, C and L bands.
