PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an optical fiber laser which provides a linearly polarized laser beam without providing a device for selecting polarization.
SOLUTION : The optical fiber laser 10 comprises a rare earth element doped fiber 11 so structured that effective refractive indexes in two orthogonally intersecting polarizing directions differ on a fiber cross section, and an exciting light source 15 for emitting exciting light incident on the core of the fiber 11. The intensity of the exciting light from the light source 15 is set so that optical oscillation may occur in only one of two polarizing directions of the fiber 11. |
