A ferrite magnet which has a basic composition represented by the general formula (A1 x R x)O·n[(Fe 1 y M y) 2 O 3] (proportion of atoms), wherein A is Sr and/or Ba; R is at least one of rare earth elements including Y; M is at least one member selected from the group consisting of Co, Mn, Ni, and Zn; and x, y, and n each is a number satisfying the relationships 0.01<=x0.4, [x/(2.6n)]<= y<=[x/(1.6n)], and 5<=n<=6 and which has a substantially magnetoplumbite-type crystal structure. The ferrite magnet is obtained by homogeneously mixing a compound of Sr and/or Ba with an iron compound, calcining the mixture, pulverizing the resultant calcination powder, during which at least one of compounds of elements R and M is added, and sintering the resultant mixture. Alternatively, at least one of compounds of elements R and M may be added in the mixing step before calcination in an amount of 0 to 80 at.%%, excluding 0 at.%%, in terms of element amount.
