A metal halide lamp used for both of a vehicle headlight and an infrared night imaging vision apparatus, comprises a refractory and light-transmitting hermetic vessel (1), a pair of electrodes (1b, 1b) sealed in the hermetic vessel, and a discharge medium sealed in the hermetic vessel. The discharge medium contains a first halide containing at least one of sodium (Na), scandium (Sc) and a rare earth metal, a second halide which is a halide of a metal which emits light mainly in a near-infrared region of a wavelength of 780 to 800 nm, and a gas which emits light mainly in a near-infrared region of a wavelength of 820 to 1000 nm, and does not substantially contain mercury. |
