PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide magnetic powder which is particularly suitable for magnetic recording medium for high-density recording which is formed in the grain size smaller than that of the conventional powder, has higher coersive force, has moreover appropriate saturated magnetization factor, and is further superior in stock stability than that of the conventional powder.
SOLUTION : The magnetic powder is formed of structural elements of at least iron and nitrogen at least containing Fe16N2 phase. This magnetic powder is formed as grain or ellipitical powder which contains nitrogen of 1.0 to 20.0 atom% for iron. The surface of powder is formed of compound containing at least a kind of element selected from among rare earth element or boron, silicon, aluminum and phosphorus. The average thickness of this surface compound layer is in the range of 1 to 5nm. |
