PURPOSE : An alkylation catalyst containing zeolite is provided to apply an alkylation catalyst having high activity and high selectivity and to apply a process for preparing ethyl benzene by alkylation of benzene with ethylene over the catalyst, which has high conversion and high selectivity, CONSTITUTION : An alkylation catalyst comprising from 50 to 70 wt% of hydrogen type ZSM-5/ZSM-11 co-crystalline zeolite containing rare earth element based on the weight of the catalyst, and the balance amount of porous inorganic oxide matrix material based on the weight of the catalyst. The zeolite has a weight ratio of ZSM-5 crystalline structure portion to ZSM-11 crystalline structure portion within the range of 0.25 to 2.5 and originally synthesized anhydrous statea chemical composition formula in terms of mole ratios of oxides as follows : XNa2O. YRE2O3. Al2O3. ZSiO2 wherein X is within the range of 0.1 to 1.0, Y is within the range of 0.1 to 1.0 and Z is within the range of 20 to 100, and provides an X-ray diffraction pattern comprising the X-ray diffraction lines and assigned relative intensities shown in Table 1 VS = very strong (100-60); S = strong (60-40); M = medium (40-20); W = weak (<20) |
