PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide sialon ceramics which are excellent also in hardness creep resistance while having moderate hardness.
SOLUTION : This invention relates to sialon ceramics, comprising a β-sialon phase, a glass phase, and optionally an α-sialon phase, wherein : the sialon ceramics may contain the α-sialon phase, provided that the weight percentage of the α-sialon phase falls within a range of less than 15% based on the total weight of the α-sialon phase and β-sialon phase; the area percentage the glass phase appearing in a cross-section of the sialon ceramics accounts for is 6-10%; 10 or more constituent particles for the β-sialon phase, each of which has a maximum diameter of 2 μm or more, exist within an area of 6.5 μm × 14.5 μm in the cross-section of the sialon ceramics; an average aspect ratio of the constituent particles for the β-sialon phase, each of which has the maximum diameter of 2 μm or more, is 3.5 or more; and the glass phase and the optional constituent particles for α-sialon phase contain a heavy rare earth element, and may optionally contain a light rare earth element. This invention also relates to a method for producing the sialon ceramics.
