PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an abrasive particle for improving performance, life, and efficacy of an abrasive article, and a method for forming same. SOLUTION : A particulate material is provided that has a body including a first phase having at least about 70 wt.% alumina for a total weight of a first phase, and a second phase comprising phosphorus, wherein the body includes at least about 0.1 wt.% of the second phase for the total weight of the body, preferably at least 0.2 wt.%, more preferably at least 30 wt.%, and wherein the second phase has an average grain size of not greater than about 1 micron. A particulate material is also provided that has a body containing a first phase containing alumina and a second phase containing phosphorus and rare earth elements, wherein the material is dispersed unevenly through the body, and the first phase has an average grain size of about 10 μm or lower, or the second phase is substantially dispersed uniformly through the body.
