Rare earth phosphate particles according to the present invention comprise aggregate particles composed of primary particles of a rare earth phosphate represented by LnPO4 (Ln represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb and Lu). The volume cumulative particle diameter at a cumulative volume of 50 vol%, D50, of the aggregate particles is 0.1-20 µm as measured by a laser diffraction scattering-type particle size distribution measurement method. The rare earth phosphate particles of the present invention are disposed inside or on the surface of a substrate and are used to cause light scattering.
