PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a gas sensor element and a gas sensor which can detect gases under a low temperature environment (300°C or lower) and does not easily generate breakage due to thermal impact caused by temperature change.
SOLUTION : The gas sensor element of the gas sensor has a multilayer structure of an inner side electrode 30, a reaction preventing layer 31, an electrode layer 32, and a lead layer 33 (top lead layer 33a). The reaction preventing layer 31 and the electrode layer 32 contain ceria with a rare earth added. The electrode layer 32 and the lead layer 33 contain a conductive oxide layer containing a perovskite phase. The reaction preventing layer 31 has a thickness of 2 μm, which is smaller than the thickness of the lead layer 33 (16 μm). The electrode layer 32 has a thickness of 11 μm, which is not smaller than the thickness of the reaction preventing layer 31 and is not larger than the thickness of the lead layer 33. The lead layer 33 has a thickness larger than the thickness of the reaction preventing layer 31.
