PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a permanent magnet which enables the enhancement of magnetic characteristics including magnetization and coercive force of a Sm-Co based sintered magnet.
SOLUTION : A permanent magnet according to an embodiment comprises a sintered compact having a composition given by the following composition formula : RpFeqMrCusCo100-p-q-r-s (where R is at least one element selected from rare earth elements, M is at least one element selected from Zr, Ti and Hf, and 10≤p≤12.5 atom%, 24≤q≤40 atom%, 0.88≤r≤4.5 atom%, and 3.5≤s≤10.7 atom%). The sintered compact includes a structure having crystal grains comprising main phases including a Th2Zn17 type crystal phase and crystal grain boundaries, provided that the crystal grains have an average crystal grain diameter of 25 μm or more. The average distance between crystal grains of which the difference of a crystal orientation angle from a [0001] orientation of the TbCu7 type crystal phase is 45° or larger in the case of indexing the Th2Zn17 type crystal phase as a TbCu7 type crystal phase is 120 μm or more.
