The invention relates to a protective marking of articles, such as documents of value and banknotes, and serves for checking the authenticity thereof with a device. The protective marking uses inorganic luminescent compounds on the basis of rare-earth and alkali metals containing substituting elements. The protective marking on the basis of these compounds has Stokes and/or anti-Stokes luminescence within a wavelength range of 400 – 2500 nm that arises under the action of exciting radiation lying within a spectral range of 700 – 1000 nm. The luminescence of the marking has the property of changing the intensity without a change in the spectral composition thereof under the action of stimulating radiation within a spectral range of 300 – 700 nm. The protective marking is inserted into the base of a document of value, or is applied to the surface thereof by printing. The invention provides a high level of protection of an article against forgery.
