PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide carbon fiber precursor fiber and carbon fiber, capable of improving the productivity of a flame resistant step and enhancing a carbonization yield.SOLUTION : Carbon fiber precursor fibers are formed of a mixture containing an aromatic polymer including a structural unit represented by the following general formula (1) and a polyacrylonitrile based polymer. Carbon fibers are obtained by flame-proofing and carbonizing the carbon fiber precursor fiber. R-Rand R-Rare independently selected from a group consisting of -H, -OH, -COOH, -SOH, metal salt of -SOH and -NH(where, except the case that all of R-Rare -H). A is -C≡C- or an aromatic group represented by the above-mentioned general formula (2), and m is 0 or 1.
