PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnetic optical material inhibiting absorbance of a laser beam with a wavelength range of 0.9 to 1.1 μm, hardly generating a heat lens to the laser beam with high output, having larger Verdet constant than that of TGG crystal and suitable for constituting a magnetic optical device such as an optical isolator.SOLUTION : The magnetic optical material consists of a light transmissive ceramics containing rare earth oxide represented by the formula (1) as a main component and a monocrystal of the rare earth oxide represented by the following formula (1) and has Verdet constant at a wavelength of 1064 nm of 0.14 min/(Oe cm) or more. (TbGdR)O(1), where x is 0.3 or more and less than 1, y is 0.1 or more and 0.3 or less, x+y<1 and R is at least one rare metal element selected from a group consisting of yttrium, lutetium, thulium, holmium, scandium, ytterbium, and europium (excluding europium alone).
