PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To suppress foreign substances from being precipitated on a negative electrode even when the negative electrode is driven at a high voltage of 4.3 V or more.SOLUTION : A coat layer containing phosphate or borate that is a salt of phosphoric acid or boric acid and a rare earth element is formed on at least a partial surface of a negative electrode active material particle. The rare earth element has an upper limit potential (equilibrium potential) in a passive region on a potential-pH diagram, the upper limit potential being lower than that of aluminum generally used as a positive electrode collector. Accordingly, in a lithium ion secondary battery using the negative electrode, even when aluminum is eluted due to high voltage charging/discharging, a reaction on the negative electrode is suppressed, so that durability is improved.
